Cosmopolitan front page analysis

This is an example of a front page which can be found and recognised for cosmopolitan magazine. The following features can be identified by the target audience as they try to maintain the same format in order to not confuse the target audience.

Red: The Cosmopolitan title is bold and set up the top of the cover, so that it is instantly recognised and seen. Because of the boldness and the contrast in colour from the background it is acceptable to have the image overlay it.
Yellow: Images usually displayed on the magazine are women. This could be because the magazine aims it at women, but makes it more acceptable for a male to purchase it. The photo's usually show a toned, athletic and healthy looking woman, which sends a indirect message to women instantly, what it is to look beautiful and perfect. This then can be suggested by the posing of the model, that you have to be suggestive, confident and sexy to be the "perfect woman"
Purple: The pricing is not printed onto the magazine, but stuck on, this could suggest that Cosmopolitan is bought by a mass audience, that feels that the contents is worth however much money it may cost. However, the retailer supplying it, has to provide the information, so it cannot mislead the customers. "January 12" is printed on the barcode sticker, which shows that Cosmopolitan is a monthly magazine, and has to fit the most up to date contents within it, otherwise the magazine would run out of interest only going into a few days/weeks from produce.
White: By hinting that the is a "true story" it displays that readers are looking for more than just opinion but facts. When doing the production piece to the coursework, I'd base my ideas on a piece like this, as it gives the audiences point of view rather than the writers. So this shows that Cosmopolitan allows their audience members to become active once in a while, and share their own judgements on what is important to them.
Blue: Advertisements for "50 Kinky Sex Moves" and "Sexiest. Body. Ever." shows that women are conscience about their body and love lives. This magazine tries to show with the catchy titles that they cover the topics that other magazines try to avoid. By the two titles being so bold and larger than the majority of the text on the page, shows that the company is trying to entice their audience with these topics and that this is one of the main reasons why the magazine is purchased.
Green: Most magazines have horoscopes in them; however Cosmopolitan try to put a twist on it, by using sexual connotations to encourage readers to see what their love life is going to be like.
Orange: Suggesting to women about the healthy side of living and then linking it with the image, sends a inactive message that women should be body conscience and think about keeping toned and fit everyday, rather than more important situations. This could tell us as readers that the people they are trying to promote may not be succeeding in the area of love or struggling in keeping active. So the only way they know how to entice readers is by sticking a one woman image blown up on the front, plus the catch subtitles to grab their attention and want to read on.

  • The writing seem to be centred around the image, as if she is the focal point that gets readers to buy the magazine.
  • The colours are kept simple and when changed, it is done so it can match.
  • There is a web address so that readers can get more information whilst waiting for the next months addition.
