London's Burning

London's Burning 4OD

Camera angles, in this document shows throughout a bird’s eye view of England and then focuses in on London areas. This then generalises it to particular areas; however when doing this it misinterprets certain areas and shows outsiders of the area that it is violent and disruptive.

For most of the showing of the deviant behaviour, we can only see eye-witnesses shooting the disorderly actions. This shows that documentation no longer has to be filmed by the media, but by the audience witnessing the event.
This was a programme, trying to recreate and show the reality of the riots during Summer. In the documentation, they try to address all the problems that could have impacted on the events that happened.
To make it more realistic interpretation they:

  •  Used real-life events
  • The programme was shot in the actual areas that were looted
  • Used clips from news occurrences
  •  Witness testimonies and interviews

Representation in the media

In films like Kidulthood and Adulthood
  •  Representing the youths
  • The setting is usually inner city
  • Mainly Black afro-Caribbean characters
  • Living in estate run-down areas
The kidulthood poster
seems to have a drearier and colourless effect, which could represent the low self esteem for the youths future. By the characters positioned in a non-motivated position, shows that they are not bothered about themselves or society itself.
The main character holding the baseball bat, shows an aggressive outlook on society and

The adulthood poster
Because there is a change in plot in the Adulthood film, the poster tries to represent the youth as more grown up and realising that their ways are wrong. The main character, compared with the first poster we saw shows that he is changing and putting down his weapon. As a representation of youth, this shows that eventually they will grow up and change or do the opposite and continue to behave defiantly.

Rioters say anger with police fuelled summer unrest

 Guardain Newspaper - website

Hundreds of rioters have revealed why they took part in the event that occurred during Summer 2011. The majority of people interviewed, said that they wanted to demonstrate their anger towards to police, as they feel angry at the fact that police label/stereotype certain areas in Britain.

What rioters say about the London riots (by rioters)
  • Opportunism - It went against the normal rules of society
  • The involvement of gang members was small
  • BBM was the commonly most used social communication for organising and sharing information
  • 59% of who were interviewed were unemployed
  • Some rioted because of tuition fees
Some felt annoyed that law abiding people were being stopped and searched continuously, and the police were just labelling them, that they then had to act out self-fulfilling the prophecies that were put on them.
